Thanks to a frequently rained-off field, indoor rounds dominate January’s record setting, but the turn of the year also brings with it new divisions for many of our juniors and so it’s no surprise the majority of this month’s seven new records were set by club juniors settling in to their new peer group.

Elsewhere, consolidation was the order of the month and only a single record changed hands, albeit after a gripping tussle that went right down to the wire.

New Year is traditionally the time for “out with the old and in with the new” so let’s kick off this month’s round up with the brand-new club records. Congratulations to:

  • Holly Smith, who managed a hat-trick this month, setting new club records for Women’s U18 Barebow Portsmouth, Women’s U18 Barebow WA 18 and Women’s U18 Longbow Portsmouth.
  • Alice Holton, who set the Women’s U14 Barebow Portsmouth Club Record.
  • Matilda Haywood, who set the Women’s U21 Compound Portsmouth
  • Arwen Marsh, who set the Women’s U21 Recurve Portsmouth
  • And finally, the only non-junior to set a new record this month, Lynsey Tucker who set the first club record for Women’s Compound Worcester.

Hat-tricks must run in the family, because Adrian Smith also notched up one of his own, consolidating his existing scores on three records: Men’s 50+ Recurve Portsmouth, Men’s 50+ Recurve WA 18m (Triple Face), and Men’s 50+ Recurve Worcester. Luke Halladay scored a brace, tightening his grip on Men’s Recurve Portsmouth and Men’s Recurve Stafford, as did Debbie Young, improving on her previous record scores for Women’s 50+ Compound Portsmouth and Women’s 50+ Compound Portsmouth (Triple Face) and Llinos Edgeley, who tightened her grip on both the Women’s 50+ Longbow Worcester and Women’s 50+ Longbow WA 18m records. Rounding up the shoring up of records, Mark Wild increased his Men’s Barebow Portsmouth score and Jim Wild further secured his hold on the Men’s 50+ Barebow Worcester record.

But all eyes should have been on the titanic struggle for the Men’s 50+ Compound Portsmouth (Triple Face) record, which was taken by Mike Kemp on 31st January from Lee Guerrier despite Lee putting up a valiant defence as he set new record scores not once but twice during January only to be pipped at the post at the very end of the month.

That’s the round-up for this month. If you want more drama and intrigue in February, get shooting, get scoring and get your scores into recordsofficer@talismanbowmen.com!
